Grills Overview and Classification

Basics about grills' types, depending on the fuel used on them and destination people may give them.

Grilling may spark your interest and entertaining needs due to three significant reasons:

  • to eat healthy and diversified
  • to socialize with your family and friends
  • to relax, entertain while cooking and to share this experience with others.

As a cooking method grilling is almost always a fast process over high heat. Grilling might easily pass for barbecue, which, in fact, is somehow contrary to grilling. Barbecue is always a slow process near indirect heat. Therefore, depending on the method there are grills for grilling and bbq grills for the indirect method of cooking meat or veggies.

Grilling became extremely popular very fast thanks to its simplicity and portability feature. Grills have tremendously influenced the way people spend their time while not at work. Among others, people seem to favor gas grills since they are more convenient and versatile.

A brief classification of grills uses three criteria:

Fuel Type

  • charcoal grills are handy and can produce great flavor. Nevertheless, you will be lighting charcoal and blackness usually released may cause a mess.
  • gas grills (also divided into 2 different types: natural gas grills and propane grills). Gas is easy to handle, but you need propane or connection to a natural gas source. The flavor is better than in electric grills
  • electric grills. Generally, electric grills are the easiest to use but you don't get a real grill flavor.
  • wood pellets. Pellet grills are easy to use and give great flavor but are expensive (around $500) and are not available in the great majority of outlets.

Destination

  • outdoor (seaside, backyard, camping, camp fire grills). This destination is preferred by far because people enjoy staying outside and usually associate barbecues to spending free time.
  • indoor (home grills), less enjoyed
  • portable grills (truck grills, car grills, roadhouse grills). These grills have been accustomized because active people prefer to go away from great cities and have their meals on the road or on short halts.

The Way Food Is Cooked

  • direct grilling which means you cook foods with direct heat (such as traditional grilling steaks, burgers, fish fillets). Anything that is very thick (no more than 2 inches) should be cooked by direct grilling.
  • indirect grilling. In this case, the food is not exposed to direct heat from the burners. It will cook more slowly. The food is enclosed by covering with a lid or hood.

Grilling is considered a healthy method of cooking because no fats and no oils are needed. Those on diet are happy to adopt this way of preparing meals. Daily grills coupled to large salads are strongly recommended. Since the battle with excessive weight is a topical issue everywhere, specifically over recent years, grills are appreciably taking the edge from now on. Even the top culinary restaurants offer grill specialties and courses.
