Portable gas grills are the best solution that outdoor grilling fans can purchase from the market, to satisfy their appetite of cooking in the middle of the nature. Portable gas grills are the miniature versions of their older and bigger brothers, the outdoor grills based either on natural gas or propane gas. The classic portable gas grills are sharing their design with the normal sized gas grills. But what is the history of the portable gas grills?
The gas grill was invented back in the 1960s, by two employees of the ARKLA company, that was the main gas producer and distributor for Arkansas and Louisiana. William G. Wepfer and Melton Lancaster were working in the marketing department of the company, being in charge of finding new ways of distributing the ARKLA gas to a larger number of clients in the residential areas.
Now, what could a residential person might use the gas, besides cooking in the kitchen? Wepfer went to an outdoor barbecue with some friends in the surroundings of their town, Little Rock, and while other enjoyed the sunny day, Wepfer and a couple of friends were taking care of the grilling session.
Sharing all sort of memories around the grill, Wepfer was also trying to keep the charcoal and the wood burning, also distributing the firing within the charcoal pane so that the heat would be evenly distributed under the grill grate. The cooking lasted for a couple of hours, but as he was driving back home, Wepfer was struck with an idea for his job.
Back home, he called Lancaster and told him to come urgently to his garage, and on the way to buy a charcoal grill. In Wepfer’ s garage, the two attached a gas tank beneath the grill itself, installed a burner under the grilling grate, connected the burner with the gas tank through a hose, with its endings secured by valves. The outdoor gas grill made its way in the world.
The main competitor of the classic charcoal grill, the gas grill followed the exact evolution like its counter-part. In time, because more and more people wanted to have a small version of their gas grills, to be easier to transport and to occupy as little space as possible, portable gas grills appeared.
These little versions of the gas grills are keeping the characteristics of their larger siblings. Just like them, portable gas grills are using gas tanks to fuel the grill. However, the legs of the grill itself are retractable, making the portable gas grills easy to hand-carry and to store them.
In the first decades, the gas tank that was used for the portable gas grills were also made smaller and smaller, however that proved to be very inconvenient for the users, as it allowed only a short cooking session. In time, this aspect was fixed, the users having two options available: either they use only the gas tank and when it is empty they refill or change it, either they use the gas tank to fire the charcoal that can be set in the grilling pane.
The portable gas grills prices vary from 100$ to 250$, depending on the manufacturer and other options offered by the grill itself.
